| Notes |
- James Irving BROOKS married Marian Elizabeth BOUGHAN, his first cousin,
once removed, on 21 Dec 1916, "the longest night of the year", at Mt.
Zion Baptist Church, Dunbrooke, Essex County, VA. The couple were married
by Rev. Goodwin FRAZER.
Family Tradition, told to author by Mrs. J.I. BROOKS, Sr. prior to her
death. Irving and Marian were married at Mt. Zion Baptist Church,
Dunbrooke, VA. After their marriage, they road horse and buggy to
Walkerton, VA, where they caught a ferry across the Mattaponi River. On
the other side they caught a stage to Lester Manor where they took a
train to West Point, VA. In West Point they took a steamboat to
Baltimore, MD, where they spent their honeymoon. "Nana" said that the
cows on the steamboat kept her awake all night.
A trip to Lester Manor, 9 Nov 1994, by the author: Lestor Manor is
located in King William County on the Southern Railway between Richmond
and West Point, VA. I visited there on my way to a jobsite on the 9th.
It is an abandoned railroad siding located on Rt 673 near the indian
reservation. There is an arched entrance into an old plantation. It is
hard to think of this place today as an active train stop. There was a
headless dog lying next to the track.
