To all Church family researchers - can you help
Quick Synopsis. Major book being written on Canadian Father of Confederation Hon. William McDougall, C.B., one of the four who negotiated with London the founding of Canada. Later, first Governor of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. We are including his ancestry. He was the only Canadian on the dais with Lincoln at Gettysburg and stayed overnight with Lincoln in a farmhouse inn nearby. We have family account never before published. Eisenhower mentioned the event in the Canadian parliament in 1958.
In April made contact with a 7th cousin, Lyle Statia on McDougall's mother's side of the family. Lyle and his wife had completed 25 years of Church family genealogical research back to Richard Church of Hartford, CT visiting MA, CT and VT gathering info. Goldmine with official copies of miltary records, burial records, etc. and opened up the long lost American families. Amazing hit considering this 6th cousin lived only 25 miles outside of Toronto, our home base and none of us knew him.
We have taken all lines further and all wive's lines to the founding of New Haven, Hartford, Hadley, etc. We are trying to fill a space.
      Question:
Background, Josiah Church(3), son of Samuel Church(2), who was son of the Richard Church(1), born 1610, who was one of the founders of Hartford, CT. Not the Richard Church of Gov Warren's daughter of Plymouth, MA.
Both Josiah Church and his brother, Samuel Church(2) had sons in Hadley, MA, each named Samuel Church. Much confusion in the records and IGI and AF. We have the correct lineage. We are interested in Samuel Church(4), son of Josiah Church(3) - born 30 Apr 1716 at Hadley, Hampshire Cy, MA. He is NOT the Samuel Church(4) son of father Samuel Church (3) that married Damaris Billing. Many modern records state that Damaris's father-in-law was Josiah Church. Wrong. He was Josiah's brother, Samuel.
Our Samuel Church(4) married Sarah who???. and when ??? and where??? The records do show all of their children born at Sheffield, Hampshire Cy. His wife may have been from that community. We do not know. No one has been able to find their marriage which would be circa 1735/1736, either in Hadley or Sheffield. The Samuel Church marriage to Sarah Smith records a different list of children, so it is not Sarah Smith. We suspect Sheffield is the community where the marriage took place. According to family records, the first child of this marriage was Samuel Church Jr born 18 Dec 1737 at Sheffield, then Abiel, Mehitable(1)-died, Sarah, Delight, Mehitable(2) lived, William, 1 Feb 1750 - then father, Samuel Sr. died at age 35 on 14 Sep 1751. The final child Submit Church was born on 13 Feb 1752 five months after her father's death.
Lyle did not take into consideration that Sarah would have had many small children and probably married again in Sheffield after the death of her husband. This would indicate a marriage circa 1751 onwards. She may have used her maiden name or her widow's name of Church. Are there any marriages in Sheffield that resemble this scenario, Sarah Church marrying ???. Could not find printed records, but Lyle, now 80, tells me that he looked at the original records in Sheffield and confirmed the children of Samuel Church and Sarah, Samuel, the son of Josiah Church. Never thought about a new marriage, so she would be buried with her new husband under his name and that is where we might find the record of her maiden name. Even that would be important, even if we do not find out the date of the original marriage.
Further to guide you-Sarah remained in Sheffield. Son Samuel Jr married Rhoda Bush on 6 Aug 1761 in Sheffield, the year Berkshire Cy. came into existance.
There is a long list of their children, one being Amaziah Church and sister Rhoda Church (who married Aner Matthews), all of the last named who left Milton, Vermont circa 1796 and settled in St. Andrews, Lower Canada. Later after Aner Matthews died circa 1816/17 they moved to York, then to Toronto Township and founded Churchville, Upper Canada.
      Can you help? Any suggestions?
Thanking you in advance for tackling this issue. It is one of the few missing links. We have established approximately 48 American grand grandparents for McDougall, including Robert Wade and Thomas Munson founders of Hartford, Dep Gov Stephen Goodyear, William Pecke, one of the first treasurers of the Colony College School-Yale, the Hon. Aaron Matthews Sr, legislator of the Republic of Vermont before the later union with the 13 states and many other Puritans. We have almost all the grand grandmothers as well and most of their children. Torrey has been a great help. Too bad he did not do the 18th century.
